In 2012, Travel+Leisure Magazine declared San Miguel de Allende one of the best places in the world to spend Christmas, writing: “A girl on a donkey leads a candle-carrying procession past San Miguel de Allende’s shops festooned with piñatas and poinsettias. When they stop before a Spanish-colonial building and break into song, you realize you’re witnessing the reenactment of Joseph and Mary’s search for shelter that takes place in the days leading up to Christmas.”
It’s true that charming San Miguel is at its most magical during the holiday season. The city is festooned with lights, bright handcrafted decorations, poinsettias and nativity scenes. It is also a wonderful time to sample Christmas delicacies like atole (a sweet drink made from corn), tamales, and dishes like Chiles en Nogada and Ensalada Noche Buena that are served during the holidays because of their festive red, white and green colors.
Christmas is traditionally celebrated on December 24th, with families often attending mass before having large meal to celebrate the holiday with friends and family. December 25th is usually a quieter day, spent at home with family. And certainly, San Miguel would be a wonderful place to share the holiday with your family.
