Mazatlán is a resort city located on the Pacific Coast and is Mexico’s closest mainland resort the United States. Compared to other resort towns like Los Cabos and Cancun, it is a fairly economical vacation destination and the economy is mainly supported by its large commercial shipping port, tourism and fishing and shrimping.
Mazatlán has an enviable climate with an average daytime temperature of 82F/28C and moderate summertime humidity. The rainy season is from late May to October each year and the area is largely protected from hurricanes by the Baja Peninsula.
Living in Mazatlán is affordable, although there has been an upturn in property values in the last several years. Expats tend to purchase Mazatlán real estate in one of two areas:
- Golden Zone – a very upscale and Americanized area featuring luxury homes and condos.
- The Historic Zone – “fixer upper” colonial properties can still be purchased inexpensively here.
In many ways, Mazatlan is still undiscovered by many foreign investors or those looking to retire in Mexico which has kept property prices and the cost of living lower than in other resort areas of Mexico. Furthermore, the city has retained its “Mexican” feel making it a great choice for those who want to live and experience the culture of Mexico.
