However, there are a lot of things you may not have known about this monumental Mexican celebration.

Here are 5 interesting facts about Mexico’s Independence Day we’d like to share with you so that you can feel totally prepared to celebrate one of this wonderful country’s most important holidays in a couple of weeks.

  1. Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, is not Mexico’s Independence Day. May 5th celebrations commemorate the battle of Puebla. September 16th is the correct date of Mexican Independence Day celebrations.
  2. The date of September 16th actually represents the beginning of a decade-long struggle that began in the early morning on that day in 1810, not the date when independence was achieved.
  3. The speech given in the early morning of September 16th was spoken by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Catholic priest of Dolores also known as Father Hidalgo. His speech is known as Grito de Dolores, or the “Cry of Dolores”.
  4. Every evening of September 15th, a reenactment of Father Hidalgo stepping out onto the balcony of the parish church in the town of Dolores and ringing the bell to call the villagers to revolt against the Spaniards is realized by the president of Mexico. He rings the bell from the National Palace in Mexico City and gives a very similar speech to the actual words shared by Father Hidalgo in 1810.
  5. Independence Day traditions and celebrations often run from September 14 through the 16 with all sorts of lively ceremonies, festivities, and of course, music and food.
